You do not need to buy mainnet ETH just to begin testing a smart contract on Ethereum Sepolia. Some popular faucets use real mainnet balance as an anti-abuse signal, but that is a provider rule, not an Ethereum requirement. As of August 8, 2026, there are still legitimate routes for a wallet with zero mainnet ETH. Choose one by the credential you can provide instead of repeatedly trying faucets that have already told you that your wallet is ineligible.

Ethereum Sepolia is a separate test network. Ethereum.org currently recommends Sepolia for application and smart-contract development and lists multiple faucets for acquiring test ETH. The protocol does not require an address to own real ETH on Ethereum Mainnet before that address can hold or spend Sepolia ETH. When a faucet asks for a mainnet balance, that provider is using the balance as an anti-abuse or reputation signal.
Use the Zero-Mainnet Eligibility Router

Route 1 — Google Cloud is the lowest-friction first attempt
Google Cloud's current Web3 product page still exposes a testnet faucet for Sepolia, and its dedicated Web3 Faucet page is live. Current developer documentation from projects using Sepolia lists the Google Cloud route as requiring a Google account rather than a mainnet ETH balance. Because Google's faucet conditions can change without notice, read the live claim screen before treating today's eligibility as permanent.
Google Cloud is useful because it changes the scarce credential
A beginner who has zero real ETH may still have a normal Google account. That replaces proof-of-capital with account-based anti-abuse. Recent developer documentation continues to describe the Google Cloud faucet as a practical zero-mainnet route, and recent developer discussions still recommend it specifically when balance-gated faucets reject new wallets.
Do not convert a daily limit into a reason to create extra accounts
If the Google faucet tells you to wait, respect the current cooldown or claim limit. Creating multiple identities, rotating accounts or automating claims defeats the anti-abuse system and makes the faucet less useful for other developers. Use another legitimate eligibility route if you need a small amount sooner.
Route 2 — LearnWeb3 trades mainnet balance for GitHub authentication
LearnWeb3's live Ethereum Sepolia faucet currently advertises 0.02 sETH per day and explicitly requires GitHub authentication as its anti-spam control. The page does not list a mainnet ETH balance requirement in its claim flow. This makes it a useful alternative when a developer has a legitimate GitHub account but no mainnet funds.
GitHub authentication is not the same as paying for eligibility
A GitHub requirement verifies an account signal rather than forcing the wallet to own real ETH. If you do not want to link GitHub, do not create fake accounts to satisfy the faucet. Move to a different route. The narrower search intent 'without GitHub' belongs as a provider-selection branch rather than another near-duplicate page for every possible login requirement.
Route 3 — the Sepolia PoW Faucet asks for work instead of capital
The current Sepolia PoW Faucet states that you enter an ETH address, perform browser-based mining work, accumulate a faucet reward and then claim it. Its anti-abuse mechanism is computational work: the faucet explains that mining is required to make mass draining and spam more expensive. The live instructions do not require owning mainnet ETH.
Proof of work is slower but solves the bootstrap problem cleanly
A PoW faucet is useful when a brand-new developer has neither mainnet capital nor an account they want to link. The tradeoff is time and local computation rather than money. Treat the displayed reward rate as live data rather than a permanent promise because faucet balance, difficulty and demand can change.
Do not confuse faucet proof of work with Ethereum consensus
Ethereum itself uses proof of stake. The Sepolia PoW Faucet's mining is only an anti-abuse mechanism implemented by that faucet service. Your browser is not mining Ethereum blocks or earning valuable mainnet ETH.
Alchemy is not a zero-mainnet route under its current rules
Alchemy's live Ethereum Sepolia faucet currently offers 0.1 ETH per day, but its eligibility section says an EVM testnet claimant needs at least 0.001 ETH on Ethereum Mainnet, sufficient mainnet activity and a low enough existing testnet balance. If your wallet has zero mainnet ETH, repeated Alchemy retries do not solve the eligibility mismatch.
Chainstack currently has an even larger mainnet gate
Chainstack's current Sepolia faucet documentation requires at least 0.08 ETH on Ethereum Mainnet and mainnet holding history. Its faucet can top an eligible Sepolia address toward 0.5 ETH and uses a 24-hour request interval, but those amounts do not matter for the zero-mainnet user because the eligibility gate fails first.
GetBlock currently requires real ETH too
GetBlock's live Ethereum Sepolia faucet instructs users to top up the connected wallet with at least 0.005 ETH on mainnet as an anti-spam requirement. It therefore belongs in the 'not suitable for zero-mainnet bootstrap' column even though it advertises free testnet ETH.
A faucet can be free and still require real capital
The word free describes the testnet token, not necessarily the eligibility process. A provider can distribute Sepolia ETH for zero fee while requiring the claimant to prove ownership of real mainnet ETH. For a beginner whose problem is precisely having zero mainnet funds, the useful comparison is eligibility—not the advertised faucet price.
QuickNode should be treated as verify-live, not guaranteed zero-mainnet
QuickNode's current public faucet page advertises Ethereum Sepolia and one drip per network every 12 hours and describes a social-sharing flow. However, current ecosystem directories and developer reports have also described transaction-history or balance-related eligibility at different times. Because the live page does not clearly document every wallet gate in the crawlable text, do not present QuickNode as guaranteed to work with a brand-new zero-mainnet wallet. Try it only after checking the current claim screen.
Chainlink is another verify-live option rather than the primary answer
Chainlink's live Ethereum Sepolia faucet currently exposes native Sepolia ETH and LINK and asks users to connect a wallet. Its crawlable page does not spell out every anti-abuse eligibility condition. It can be worth checking, but this page does not promise zero-mainnet eligibility when the provider itself does not make that condition explicit in the current public text.
Do not use a random faucet simply because it says 'no balance required'
Smaller faucets can legitimately operate with captcha, address cooldowns or other controls, but the search results also contain sites with little history or unclear operators. A new developer does not need to connect a wallet, sign typed data or approve a contract merely to receive native Sepolia ETH. Prefer a provider referenced by Ethereum documentation or a well-established developer platform, and use only the public receiving address when that is all the faucet needs.
Never enter a seed phrase to unlock test ETH
A faucet can need your public 0x address, an account login, wallet connection or a provider-specific anti-bot check. It never needs the wallet's recovery phrase or private key to send Sepolia ETH. If a site asks for those secrets, close it.
Do not send real ETH to a stranger for Sepolia ETH
Sepolia ETH is intended for development and has no normal mainnet monetary value. If a faucet gate asks you merely to prove an existing mainnet balance, that is different from sending real ETH to an unknown address. Since zero-mainnet routes exist, a beginner does not need to purchase test ETH from a stranger just to deploy a learning contract.
Check that you need Ethereum Sepolia, not another Sepolia network

- 4. If you want an account-free route, use the Sepolia PoW Faucet and perform the required work.

When the answer should change
This page has a short review cycle because faucet rules change quickly. A provider can add a mainnet-balance check, remove a social login, change its drip or run out of test ETH without Ethereum Sepolia itself changing.
