What to Do Before Pasting Your Wallet Address on a Faucet
Copying a wallet address feels like the easiest part of a faucet withdrawal. It is also the moment when several different mistakes collapse into one irreversible field. Before pasting, confirm that the field actually requests a blockchain address, select the exact coin and network on both sides, copy the address from the wallet’s current Receive screen, paste it into a neutral note and compare the result with the source, then paste it into the faucet and compare again. Check whether the destination has a minimum, memo or other condition, and use the smallest practical payout as the first route test. Never provide a seed phrase, private key, wallet password or two-factor code.
Treat the paste as a routing decision
A wallet address is not merely an account name. It selects a destination controlled by particular keys on a particular blockchain. The faucet also selects an asset, network, amount and payment mechanism. Gate 1: read the field label as a contract

A logo does not change the field contract
A FaucetPay banner can be an advertisement or referral link while the withdrawal form pays directly on-chain. Likewise, a wallet logo can illustrate a compatible application without defining the network. Trust the live payout method and field instructions, not the nearest brand image. When the interface contradicts the help page, pause and obtain written clarification before supplying any destination.
Gate 2: write the asset and network as one pair
Record both parts together, such as DOGE on Dogecoin, LTC on Litecoin, USDT on TRON, or USDC on Polygon. The token name alone is incomplete because assets such as USDT and USDC exist on several networks. The network alone is also incomplete because an address can receive different tokens on the same chain. The pair must match the faucet’s sending route and the wallet’s receive screen.
A matching address format does not prove a matching network
EVM-compatible networks commonly use the same 0x address format, and the same wallet account can show the same address on Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon and other EVM networks. MetaMask’s current documentation warns that assets and transactions remain network-specific even when the address is identical. A faucet can therefore accept the string while sending the token to a network you did not intend. Validate the network by name, not by appearance.
Never select a network only because its fee is lower
A faucet or exchange may offer several withdrawal networks with very different costs. The cheapest option is useful only when the receiving wallet supports that network and the asset will be usable there. Trezor’s current guidance warns that choosing an unsupported network can result in loss or require a more complex recovery workflow. The fee is considered after compatibility, not before it.
Gate 3: generate the address from the destination
Open the wallet or custodial destination you intend to use, select the relevant coin and network, and use its current Receive or Deposit command. Do not retrieve the address from an old screenshot, a forum post, a search result, an unrelated blockchain explorer or a message sent months ago. A current receive screen provides context: wallet account, asset, network and any additional condition.
Do not copy your own address from transaction history
Transaction history is not a trusted address book. Address-poisoning attacks place zero-value or dust transactions from lookalike addresses into the history, hoping that a user later copies the fake destination. MetaMask’s current security guidance says to obtain addresses from the original source and inspect middle characters, not only the beginning and end. For a faucet payout, return to the wallet’s Receive screen every time the address provenance is uncertain.
Hardware-wallet users should verify the receiving address on the device
A desktop or mobile interface can be modified by malware, a fake application or a compromised browser. Trezor instructs users to compare the receive address shown in Trezor Suite with the address displayed on the hardware device. Its Trusted Display is intended to reveal the actual address controlled by the device. After the match, copy the verified address and keep the device comparison available during the paste check.
Gate 4: prove that the wallet is recoverable
Receiving into an address you cannot later recover is not a successful setup. Before using a newly created self-custody wallet, complete its official backup process and confirm which account generated the address. Never test recovery by typing the seed phrase into a faucet, browser popup or unsolicited support form. The phrase belongs only in the wallet’s legitimate creation or restoration process.
A public address is shareable; the recovery secret is not
A public receiving address allows others to send compatible assets and view its public blockchain activity. It does not authorize spending. The seed phrase or private key does. A faucet that only needs to pay you has no reason to request wallet restoration, private-key import, remote access or a screen share of recovery information. When the request moves beyond a public receiving detail, stop the payout process.
Gate 5: check destination-specific conditions
A self-custody wallet and a custodial deposit account do not impose the same receiving rules. An exchange or microwallet can require a minimum deposit, a supported network, confirmations and sometimes a memo, tag or payment ID. A self-custody account normally does not need an exchange-style account tag, but the wallet still must support the network and token. Copy every condition from the destination screen rather than assuming that the address alone is sufficient.

Check whether the destination address can change or expire
Some custodial services rotate deposit addresses, assign temporary invoices or require a fresh memo. A self-custody wallet may generate new addresses for privacy while older addresses remain controlled by the same wallet. The destination’s own instructions determine whether reuse is supported. For a faucet that stores the payout detail permanently, avoid a short-lived or single-use destination unless the service explicitly supports repeated payments to it.
Avoid confusing an account address with a token contract
A token contract address identifies the smart contract, not the user’s receiving account. Trezor warns that tokens sent directly to a contract address can become stuck when the contract has no recovery function. Copy the wallet account address from Receive, not the contract address from a token information page or block explorer. A faucet requesting a contract address would need an unusual, explicit explanation.
Gate 6: perform the neutral clipboard check
Copy the address from the trusted receive screen and paste it first into a plain-text note that does not auto-format links. Compare the pasted string with the source. MetaMask describes clipboard hijacking as malware that detects a copied crypto address and replaces it with an attacker’s address. A mismatch means the device or clipboard cannot be trusted for the payout; stop and investigate rather than re-copying repeatedly.
Compare more than the first and last characters
Checking a short prefix and suffix catches accidental truncation but is weaker against deliberately generated lookalike addresses. Paste into the faucet and verify again
The neutral note proves what left the clipboard at one moment. A malicious extension or page script could still alter a field later. Check that no leading or trailing spaces, hidden characters, line breaks or prefix changes were introduced. Do not rely solely on a green validation icon.
A valid-format message proves very little
The faucet may verify only length, prefix or checksum. That can reject obvious typos, but it cannot prove that the address belongs to you, that the chosen network is correct or that the destination will credit the amount. An attacker’s address can be perfectly valid. Treat form validation as one syntax check inside the provenance chain, not as proof of ownership.

Public blockchains allow observers to follow address activity. Giving the same long-term address to many faucet operators can associate those sources with one public balance and transaction history. Do not connect the wallet when an address is enough
A direct faucet payment normally requires only a receiving address. Connecting a browser wallet exposes the account to a dapp session, and signing a message or approving a token creates additional permissions or authentication evidence. Those actions may be legitimate for some Web3 applications, but they are not necessary merely to receive an ordinary transfer. When the faucet unexpectedly changes from “paste address” to “connect and approve,” treat it as a different interaction and reassess the site.
Check the source minimum against the destination minimum
A faucet can send an amount that is valid on-chain but too small for a custodial destination to credit. An exchange can impose its own threshold. Before pasting a custodial deposit address, confirm that the expected net faucet payment clears the live destination rule.

Worked example: DOGE to a self-custody wallet
A faucet offers a direct Dogecoin-network payout and asks for a DOGE address. The user opens the Dogecoin account in a self-custody wallet, verifies the current receive address, copies it, checks the pasted middle and end segments in a note and repeats the comparison inside the faucet. The form does not ask for a seed phrase, connection or signature. The route is ready for the smallest practical DOGE payout test.
Worked example: USDT address looks valid but the network is wrong
A faucet offers USDT on TRON, while the user opens an Ethereum account and copies a 0x address. Both screens mention USDT, but the network pair does not match and TRON does not use that Ethereum address format. The user must obtain a compatible USDT TRC20 destination or choose a different faucet route. The error is caught before paste because the asset and network were written as one pair.
Worked example: the same 0x address does not remove the network question
A wallet shows the same 0x account on Ethereum and Polygon. The faucet offers USDC on Polygon. The string may be identical on both networks, but the user still confirms Polygon support, the token version and the later gas requirement. Selecting Ethereum merely because the address looks the same would change where the asset exists. Address equality is not network equality.

A source-side Paid label does not complete the check when the wallet or custodial account shows nothing. Once the receipt is confirmed, save the verified destination as a labelled contact when the wallet supports an address book, but still recheck the live route before meaningful future transfers.
What to do when the pasted address changes
Stop without submitting the faucet form. Preserve screenshots of the trusted source and changed paste, disconnect the affected device from sensitive wallet activity and scan it using the operating system or security tools you trust. Check browser extensions and recently installed software. Use a clean device to review the wallet and account history. Changing the address back manually does not prove that the malware or extension has stopped interfering.
What to do after submitting the wrong address
Cancel the withdrawal immediately if the faucet still offers that option and replace the payout detail only through the legitimate account interface. Otherwise contact the faucet with the request ID and timestamp. A blockchain transaction confirmed to an address you do not control is generally not reversible.
