Why Are Microwallets Used for Tiny Crypto Payouts?

A direct transfer has network, processing and reconciliation costs that do not fall to zero merely because the reward is tiny. Aggregating claims makes the eventual settlement amount larger relative to the fee.
Use the Three-Ledger Microwallet Model
Keep the stages separate.
- Source ledger: the faucet or task site owes a reward
- Microwallet ledger: the platform credits the user internally
- Blockchain ledger: a later deposit or withdrawal settles on-chain
Internal credit can happen without a public transaction hash
A compatible faucet can call the microwallet’s API and update the user’s custodial balance. The lack of an individual blockchain transaction does not mean nothing happened; the evidence is the platform’s authenticated payment history.
Aggregation improves the fee ratio
A fixed or semi-fixed withdrawal cost consumes a smaller percentage of a larger accumulated balance. Ten internal credits followed by one withdrawal can be more efficient than ten direct chain transactions.

Worked example
Twenty faucets each send a $0.002 equivalent internal credit. The microwallet balance reaches $0.04 without twenty blockchain transactions. If the eventual withdrawal costs $0.20, aggregation helped operationally but the balance is still too small to exit economically.
When a direct wallet is better
Direct self-custody can be preferable when the payment is large enough, the sender supports the correct network, the user wants immediate key control and the transfer does not create excessive fee or UTXO fragmentation.
When a custodial exchange is different
An exchange may also maintain internal balances, but its main role is trading and conversion. A microwallet is designed around small incoming payments and aggregation. Neither category guarantees deposit insurance or unrestricted access.
