Which Crypto Skills Can You Prove Before Spending Any Money?
You can learn most beginner wallet and transaction concepts before buying any coin. Start with public blockchain data, then use a separate testnet account and valueless test tokens. Only after those exercises should you consider one legitimate micro-reward on a real network. The target is a completed skill record—not a portfolio, trading result or endless faucet routine.

Level 1 — learn from an existing transaction
Choose a public transaction from a reputable explorer and identify the network, sender, recipient, asset, amount, fee, status, block and confirmations. This teaches the difference between wallet display and blockchain evidence without creating an account.
Read token movements separately from native value
An EVM transaction can send zero ETH while transferring an ERC-20 token through contract logs. The transaction fee and token amount are different values. Record both before moving to a wallet exercise.
Level 2 — create a separate learning wallet
Install from the official source, create a new recovery boundary and write down the network and account address. Do not import a seed phrase that controls savings. The wallet should be disposable after the course.
Prove that an address is public and the recovery secret is not
Copy the receiving address and verify that it can be searched on an explorer. Then record where the recovery method is stored offline. No tutorial, faucet or support account should receive the seed phrase or private key.
Level 3 — use a current public testnet
Ethereum currently documents Sepolia for application testing and Hoodi for validator and staking scenarios. Testnet balances and transaction history are separate from Mainnet, and testnet ETH is intended to have no real value.
Do not reuse a valuable mainnet account
Ethereum’s current network guidance recommends separating mainnet and testnet accounts for security. Use the learning wallet, select the intended test network and request only enough test tokens for the exercises.
A testnet faucet is a distribution tool, not income
Official developer faucets can send test ETH, SOL or test tokens for supported networks. Coinbase’s current faucet tools include Base Sepolia, Ethereum Sepolia and Solana Devnet examples. These assets are for testing and should not be bought.
Level 4 — send one testnet transaction
Send a small amount between two learning addresses. Before confirming, record the amount, gas estimate and destination. Afterward, locate the transaction hash and compare wallet status with explorer status.
Run one controlled failure
Attempt a transaction that the wallet safely blocks, such as entering more than the spendable test balance or observing a greyed-out confirmation when gas is unavailable. Do not sign an unknown contract merely to create an error.
Learn the pending-transaction model
Submit only when the test network and wallet support the exercise. Observe nonce, pending status and confirmation. If a transaction stalls, use the wallet’s documented Speed Up or Cancel mechanism rather than creating a random queue.
Level 5 — compare custody without funding it
Document the difference between a self-custody testnet wallet, an exchange account and a microwallet such as FaucetPay. Note who controls the keys, where the ledger lives, whether a personal TXID exists and what would be needed to withdraw.
Use read-only fee planning
Open current fee and minimum pages without depositing. Build a hypothetical route from a $1 reward to a wallet or exchange and calculate where the amount would become uneconomic. This teaches withdrawal friction without sacrificing funds.
Level 6 — choose whether a live micro-reward adds a new lesson
A real reward is optional. Use it only to learn something testnet cannot demonstrate well, such as a custodial FaucetPay credit, a real exchange minimum or the emotional effect of irreversible value. Keep the amount tiny and the route verified.
Do not buy gas merely to complete the course

Worked course without any mainnet reward
A beginner reads an Ethereum transaction, creates a separate Sepolia wallet, receives test ETH, sends one transaction and documents gas, nonce and confirmation. The user compares self-custody with FaucetPay and decides that buying crypto is not yet necessary.
